A few weeks ago the ActiveBuilding team attended the RealWorld 2014 user conference in Chicago. It was our first time going and as the new kid on the RealPage block it was tons of fun! In addition to meeting customers and demoing the ActiveBuilding product for them, we also had the opportunity to show off the Egg Package Delivery System that we have been working on. Aside from a few pilot program communities and special guests to our Dallas and Seattle offices, this was the first time that customers have been able to see these smart locker systems out in the wild.
The Egg (it’s just a codename for now) was highlighted in the RealWorld keynote and it was definitely a hit with the industry folks who came back to see them at our booth. In a nutshell the Egg lockers are smart package lockers that are integrated with ActiveBuilding; residents are notified via email, SMS, and the web when couriers deliver their packages to the lockers. The Egg is a game changer at the price point (free to properties!) and is a huge benefit to the residents, property staff, and delivery couriers.
To help promote the Egg at RealWorld we hid a few golden egg prizes in some of the locker doors. Attendees that came by to hear what the Egg was about and stayed to watch a quick 3 minute demo got to peek behind a random door in the Egg to see if they won. We gave away all ten golden eggs at RealWorld, and each one contained a $100 gift card!
We didn’t stop at just the golden eggs either – we also gave away some big prizes to RealWorld attendees who participated in some of the workshops and seminars at the conference. The Egg was a perfect way to deliver an XBOX ONE gaming console, Pebble Smartwatch, and Fitbit Flex to the lucky winners.
RealWorld 2014 was amazing and we’re looking forward to seeing our customers there next year in San Diego. The ActiveBuilding team is also excited to be bringing the Egg to more pilot properties around the US! ActiveBuilding is starting the new year with a new look. The login page has been revamped with a fresh new design. We simplified and streamlined the log-in page to enhance the user experience. In addition, the new design is more “responsive”, which means the screen will adjust to fit any screen size, including tablets, PCs and smart phones. This means your community portal will be more user –friendly and look fabulous on any device.

As you can see, important links are at the bottom. You can change which links appear on the login page by going to My Community/Links/clicking the little yellow pencil associated with the link you want to change/check the box “Display link publicly on login page”
Not only did we make the site more responsive, but we also added a new Facebook login option that will allow users to login to the community portal with their Facebook username and password.
Please note that this feature will only work if the email address you use for Facebook and ActiveBuilding are the same.

Who doesn’t LOVE time-savers?
Are you tired of having “pending” amenities because you’re waiting for your residents to pay the fees that are associated with them? Well, we now have an easy solution for this. Ancillary payments, just for your amenities and/or guest suites. It only takes a few simple steps to get set up and no more ‘pending payments’ for amenities. Then all you need to do is change payment status for your amenities to ‘pay online’. Residents will not be able to make a reservation without paying for these fees’ online first. However, for those residents that do not prefer to make payments online, then they will need to have a staff member make the reservation on their behalf. SEE it is Simply, Easy and Efficient.
To get more information on the Ancillary payment please log onto your community portal, go to ‘My Dashboard’>Application Settings>General Tab. In the middle of the page you can access additional information on this payment. However, you are always welcome to contact your Customer Success Manager at 888-304-5220 8AM-5PM PST.

We are happy to announce that we have developed a new module for our Community Portals! Interest Groups are something that has been in the works for quite some time and it makes us very proud to be able to release them to all our Community Portals! With our Interest Groups we envision all the different people, with different hobbies and things that drive them, to interact as a community. As residents join groups and make new friends they will begin planning community events and trips that all started on the Community Portal that you provide!
For example; I am a huge baseball fan and as the season meanders through the summer and fall I can now utilize my Community Portal to talk to all the other baseball lovers that live in the same community as I do. We could put together viewing parties of our favorite teams and figure out what pubs and restaurants in the area are playing the games. With each friend that I make through the portal the less likely I am to move out when my lease is up. In fact, the idea of moving somewhere that doesn’t have this already established online networking tool isn’t something I even want to think about!
As each resident joins the Portal for the first time they are prompted to check the boxes for the things they are interested in. (Pictured below)
From there they will be put into the corresponding group for that interest. As a manager you will be able to see how many people are in each group. (Pictured below)
We encourage you to get the residents talking to others in the groups by hosting events or even just posting in a couple groups that you find interesting. The word will get around that you and your team are active on the site!
Get to know your residents using Interest Groups! You never know where it will lead.

Today we are happy to announce that the new version of our on-site app, ActiveDesk, is available in the app store.
Version 2.0 adds the ability to manage maintenance on the go. Maintenance employees can download the app to their iPhone and add/update service requests on the go. From changing statuses, to communicating with residents, and keeping track on material used. Everything that’s available from the web interface can now be done on the go using the iOS app.
With this new version we are also introducing the new Maintenance Timer. An easy way to keep track on the time spent working on a service request. From the mobile app, users can Start/Pause/Resume the timer each time they work on a ticket. The data will sync back to the cloud and will be available from the main web interface.
Since the introduction of the ActiveDesk app back in April, it proved to be a valuable tool to for managing deliveries. With today’s release the maintenance team can benefit as well. We will keep working towards our vision of the mobile office by constantly adding and improving our ActiveDesk platform.

The Lobby Display screen is one of the most recognized elements of our web application. Hundreds of communities nationwide are utilizing this feature to drive dedicated TV screens in the property to better communicate with residents. From announcements, storage room information, all the way to events and local movie showtimes. The Lobby Display is the visual trademark of an ActiveBuilding Community Portal. Our record holder for most screens, Living at Santa Monica (an Alliance Residential community), has 16 screens installed throughout the property!
Until today, the Lobby Display setup required a dedicated computer to operate. This is both expensive and somewhat cumbersome to install. This all changed today with the introduction of our new GoogleTV app – ActiveDisplay. By simply purchasing a supported TV, or a cheap dedicated device, your TV can service as a Lobby Display application without the need for a dedicated computer. Simply visit the Google Play store on the TV/device to download the ActiveDisplay app. When launching the app the first time, it will ask for your ActiveBuilding URL, from that point on you are all set. Easy and cost effective!

One of our most popular features among customers is package tracking. Residents are notified via email, text, or voice notification when a package is logged in by an on-site team member. When residents return home from their busy day they might be reminded again when they see their package on your lobby display screen in a public area.
ActiveBuilding is always thinking of ways to make operations easier and have done exactly that with the ActiveDesk App, which can be downloaded for free from the Apple Online Store. Designed specifically for the property on-site team, the app allows staff users to log packages in and sign packages out using any iOS device on the move.

With more than 100 million smartphone users in the U.S., it is safe to say that a majority of multifamily residents have access to emails and/or text messages via their smartphones. However, believe it or not, there are residents who would prefer to receive a simple phone call instead of a text message or email. ActiveBuilding can now assist your team with these phone calls.
“ActiveBuilding is designed to assist your onsite teams with all forms of resident communication,” explains ActiveBuilding CEO Kobi Bensimon. “Offering a voice notification option will ensure that our customers can reach all of their residents through the portals via the residents’ preferred method of communication.”
In addition to email and text notifications, ActiveBuilding Community Portals now feature an automated call feature for Mass Messages and Package Notifications. Whether it is a true emergency notification (i.e. Water or Electrical Shut-Off) or a simple reminder to pick-up a package from the office, ActiveBuiding Community Portals are dialed in and ready for use.
Residents can select their package notification preferences in the Notifications settings under the Account tab in the top, right corner of the portal. (See below)
Staff members can select the “Send Voice Notification” option under the Notifications menu in the Advanced Delivery Options while composing a message in the portal. See below.

The lobby display is one of the most visual aspect of our application. Most of our client utilize it as a digital signage in a public area like the lobby, next to the mailboxes, or mounted near the elevators. Resident love the convenience and property managers find it useful both for communicating with residents and for attracting prospects.
Today we are introducing our new design. Users can now preview and enable the new display from their setting page. So what’s new:
- A brand new look and feel
- 3 themes to choose from: Energized, Traditional, and Black-Tie
- New content: Community events, Local offers, and Movie Showtimes, all based on the community location
- Day and Time indicator (the #1 request from our clients!)
